Dr. Carlos A. Unzueta

Dr. Carlos A. Unzueta M.D., 82 Physician Lake Wales – Beloved local pediatrician Dr. Carlos A Unzueta, 82 of Lake Wales passed away after a well fought 9-year battle with Alzheimer’s on January 27th, 2016. He was born in Ica, Peru and was raised in Nazca, Peru. From 1955 to 1963 he attended undergraduate school and medical school at San Marcos University of Lima, Peru. Following graduation, Dr. Unzueta was appointed pediatric professor at San Marcos University from 1964 to 1967. He was granted an international fellowship to study in Paris, France at the International Children Center where he became fluent in French and enjoyed the French culture. After completing his international training, Dr. Unzueta decided to further his medical career in the United States to provide a brighter future for his family. In 1969, Dr. Unzueta assumed a straight internship in pathology at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, followed by a pediatric residency at Jewish Hospital Medical Center, also in Brooklyn. In 1971, Dr. Unzueta assumed a senior pediatric residency at Jacksonville University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Following this, Dr. Unzueta moved to Lake Wales, Florida in 1972 and grew a well-respected pediatric and family practice over the course of a 35-year career. In addition to private practice, Dr. Unzueta also worked as an emergency room physician at Lake Wales Hospital and was named President of Lake Wales Medical Staff in 1981. Dr. Unzueta loved providing compassionate healthcare to children and families of Lake Wales and officially retired from medicine in 2007. In his free time, Dr. Unzueta enjoyed spending time with his family, tennis, and several other outdoor activities. He and his wife Elizabeth were members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Lake Wales. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Unzueta; his sons Rafael Unzueta and his wife Julie; Carlos Unzueta and his wife Amy; Major Cesar Unzueta (USMC) and his wife Ginger, and Juan Carlos Unzueta. He also leaves his grand-children Alexander, Vaughan, Ellie, Layla, Mason, Ava, Caroline, Isabella, Annie and Stephen. Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, January 31st from 6pm to 8pm at Marion Nelson Funeral home located at 454 S Buckmoore Rd, Lake Wales, FL 33853 A 1pm funeral service will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church located at 644 S 9th St Lake Wales FL 33853 on Monday February 1st, 2016.
